The above is only a small sample of what brings in traffic to our project websites.

• Our tests have shown that vague two word popular phrases (such as "book website" or "engineering website") bring in loads of traffic, but not quality traffic. More specific but still highly popular terms, like seen in the above images, bring in significantly higher quality traffic.

• Plenty of traffic comes from other countries such as Germany, Poland, France depending on your page topics. Is your website selling or providing for a global market? If not, do you have a special section you could dedicate for those users from other countries who can't access your products currently, but may be able to in the future? Some times 10-50 percent of visitors will be accessing your website from Europe, Asia, and others.

• Getting content entered, indexed, directory-friendly, and generated in your website is far more important than looking at your statistics constantly. Looking at your statistics simply proves your work, but it does not help your website directly in any way. Do not harp on statistics until you actually have significant amount of content for the visitors in the first place.

• Significant amount of content means thousands of pages - not hundreds of pages. Even small websites can generate thousands of web pages with the proper knowledge.

• Thousands of high quality pages are hard to come up with if you have only a few products or services to sell. Your products will never sell from search engine traffic if you only have a 40 page sized website. You may get by with word of mouth, but you won't grab thousands of interested customers from search engines.

• Generating high quality content is sometimes as simple as grabbing streaming data from other sites that offer you tens of thousands of pages of high quality and relevant content. That, and automatically generating websites from existing offline and online material sitting on your hard drive (hint: source code files, documentation, automation, previously written books and essays, optical character recognition) is a key to saving thousands of hours of manual typing and publishing.

• Complex directory structures can kill your website from being easily indexed into the search engines. There is one specific directory structure that works very well. Complex forums and plenty of URL variables can also make it tough for the engines to index, simply due to complexity of the website design. Although search engine bots no longer ignore URL variable style urls, they still have a hard time choking them down if they are not designed with caution (htaccess tricks can help, but not when the website is still complex underneath)

• Link popularity is somewhat hyped. Link popularity is important, but some of our search terms that generate sales are not back-linked anywhere else on the web except from within our own website. Link popularity decreases in importance with specific search terms, but increases in importance with vague search terms.

• PageRank is also somewhat over-hyped. Some websites with a Page Rank of 3 bring in more results than many PageRank 5 sites, just because of the PageRank 3 site sometimes being less complex for the engine robots to eat up. PageRank and link popularity still play a strong role in search engine marketing, though. A site with a high page rank and an easy to eat up website will of course benefit greatly.
