Movie:
A man who is not a scientist has had a horrible life and is ready to commit suicide.
This man was raped as a kid and has no reason to live, nor does he appreciate the universe he is in one bit.
At the point of suicide where he is literally as close to killing himself as anyone could possibly be, he has a flashback to a physics class that he excelled at.
He never became a physicist and never had any reason to become one. Before he kills himself he decides to pursue physics to see if he can transfer himself into a parallel universe that is better than the one he is in, where he is not suicidal. He becomes one of the top physicist.
