A man is not interested in having children for several reasons: he has been unable to form any relationships with women and finds them repulsive (personality, even though he is attracted to them), and many more reasons. He donates his sperm to a sperm bank in hope that his genes will spread on, just not the way he had hoped in a traditional relationship.
Years later he is going for a hike, and at the top of the hill is a neighborhood.. he decides to go for a walk up there where he normally does not (he usually sticks to the forest hiking trails). He finds a school and it reminds him of his child hood, and an outdoor skating rink - which reminds him of the outdoor rink he played at when younger. One the way home he passes by a mother and two young children - he is instantly attracted to the woman, but remembers his previous history with women - plus, she has children and is likely married, so he just passes on - but over hears them - the mother says to the boy "you little shit, did you eat the pizza for breakfast that we had last night that I put in the fridge?".. the child grudgingly says "yes". Then she slams the garage house door, and then later comes back. She opens the door and says "how much did you eat? all of it?"... the boy responds back and says "yes".
The main character finds this strange, as, pizza is the only thing he can eat for breakfast - he has always avoided breakfast and found that the only thing he can eat in the morning if anything at all, is pizza - all other breakfast food turns him off and he usually skips breakfast. He laughs, and walks by, taking a second look at the children and the mother - the child looks much like him.
He ends up passing by there again as he goes to this trail often, and now goes to the skating rink for nostalgia to remember the good old days when he was a child and would go in the cold to play outdoor hockey.
He ends up asking the woman out on a date as he finds out she is single. She is the same as him: doesn't like people, has had trouble dating - they both think pretty much everyone they have dated is rotten to the core. He doesn't ask her about her children and who the father is, as he doesn't want to pry.. But on their date he sort of jokingly, but in a way seriously, says that she should have her children DNA tested to see if he is the father, because he doesn't eat much for breakfast other than pizza. She laughs and says "that's impossible that you would be the father because I had children through sperm donation". He looks extremely startled and doesn't say anything. He knows that mathematically it is improbable for him to just discover his children through pure chance one day on a walk.
They do end up getting the DNA test and it comes back saying obviously that he is not the father. But they do hit it off and become a couple. Then, however, months later a letter comes back from the DNA testing company saying the results they got back were invalid and mixed up with another child of the same year due to a corrupt database problem they had, and they are so sorry and will give them a free lifetime membership for their trouble (worth thousands of dollars), and that the child was now correctly entered into the database and that the results of his DNA will come shortly. It turns out he is the father of this child.
