~ big design up front means choose a subset |
Big design up front can be really healthy, but when it comes time to implement most of the features discussed on papers, in binders, sketches, drawings, it's simply not possible to implement all the big design at once.
The easiest way to still do some big design up front is to go ahead and do the grand design and discussion of features (even if discussing it with only one person who will create the software, yourself), but to only implement in the beginning stages and important tiny subset of what was written down. Then, later, implement more of the design.
This is all easier said than done, as which subset will you choose to implement? The skeleton to get the program working as a prototype, first, and work in modules: implement modules you find interesting that day, without worrying about the large program or large design as a whole - as that will scare you.
This will also scare you: Fuck you, and fuck off.
