~ are local networks dead
When the 1000 speed PCI network card came out (instead of the 10/100) I was excited. Now I could transfer massive sized files (100GB or even 3GB) at super high speed.

I had one of those 1000 speed network cards... and so excited that I never used it.

People send files to each other:
-by email
-upload to a web server and give them a web link
-use a usb stick
-put it on an SD card

People don't use LAN's or local networks to transfer files. Samba is too f*cked up and hard to set up and configure..... Windows file sharing and networking has too many issues setting up multiple pc's...

So you just end up putting a 3GB or 10MB file on a USB stick and manually walking the file over to your computer...

Local networks are dead... No one cares to set that complexity up...

It's easier to use google cloud (google drive) or just send the file by email or...

Use a USB stick.

I do wish that this whole 1000Mbit or giga network stuff mattered and someone actually cared.

It would be cool to just log in to my laptop, and send a huge 7GB DVD movie file over to another desktop or laptop or tablet in the house (or business) so I could use that file on another PC. And the speed of transfer would be so quick compared to the old 10Mbit cards..

But let's be honest no one does that. I wish they did.. that would be cool.

Networks are too hard to set up. No one uses networks (local) we just push stuff over a slow internet connection, or a slow usb 2.0 connection. Even usb 3.0 will help kill the local network further, as now it will be faster and less need for the 1000Mbit network speed if USB transfer is faster.

Other than some businesses who still use Local networks, basically the Local Network is dead. Maybe a few LAN parties are still going on - but come on, I'm talking about people in general. We just don't use local networks much, especially in homes. Networks are a pain in the ass to set up, much more of a pain than buying a $10.00 USB stick at Best Buy or Walmart and just walking over the USB stick to your nearest computer.

Networks are cool. Too bad people don't use local ones. The only thing that will save the local network, are those businesses that still use them. But even those businesses: it's tempting for the CEO or an employee just to grab his USB stick from his drawer, and take a walk down the hallway (get some exercise after sitting all day long) and visit someone's office, saying "can you check out these files I put in the USB stick, it's our new product we're coming out with". Or, it's easier just to send over email. Indeed some email systems are set up locally to bypass the internet... and the email goes through a local network... So the really only chance at the local network surviving is via businesses. But basically the local network is dead.

Somewhere lying in a pile or box, I have a 1000Mbit "giga" network card, PCI or PCI-E. I just wish I could make some use of it. Seemed like a cool idea.
